Grauburgunder Oberrotweil 2023
Grauburgunder Oberrotweil
Grauburgunder Oberrotweil
Damp Flint & Ripe Pear
In the glass, the wine presents itself with a rich, reddish-gold shimmer – almost like liquid autumn light. The color already suggests that this is not a lean patio wine, but a Pinot Gris with substance, character, and a slight impression of maturity. Unfiltered depth, very clear at its core.
The nose is dominated by a fine mix of ripe pear, apple peel, and green tea – like a fruit bowl on a stone slab. Herbal hints of savory and a touch of gooseberry are added, underpinned by delicate smoke, damp flint, and a hint of vanilla and brioche.
On the palate, it's surprisingly textured—creamy yet with a salty edge. The fruit is present but never boisterous: yellow apple, a hint of lemon, a trace of peach. The acidity has grip without becoming sharp. A fine phenolic structure runs through, providing a subtly tart finish. 4. Special features: aging, cultivation & vinification.
A village wine that tastes like a single-vineyard wine: matured for two years in large wooden barrels on its full lees, spontaneously fermented, minimally fined. The vines grow in volcanic weathered soil with a loess overlay – you can taste it: tension, spice, salinity. Not a show-off, but a wine with backbone and character.
The Peter Wagner Way: Elegant freshness versus lush sweetness. Dry and fully fermented development, long yeast storage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Peter Wagner is a winner - young, focused, progressive. After studying in Geisenheim and gaining 5 years of experience as a cellar master at "the" Franz Keller from Kaiserstuhl, he took over his parents' business in Oberrotweil and started from zero to one hundred with the 2017 vintage. Peter Wagner scores points with his own style, which seems unusual for the Kaiserstuhl: he harvests his grapes relatively early in the year in order to counteract the Baden wine with its typical lush sweetness with a slim and elegant freshness. In addition, his wines are matured dry and fully fermented, stored on the yeast for a long time and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
