Lentsch Winery
The Winemaker Family from Lake Neusiedl
In Podersdorf am Neusiedler See, the Lentsch family runs their winery in the third generation. Markus and Thomas combine the vaulted cellar built by their grandfather in 1962 with modern sensitivity. In addition, there is a clear focus on Burgundy varieties and the red champions Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch.
Family winery with a sea breeze and a lighthouse.
In Podersdorf, where the iconic lighthouse stands in Lake Neusiedl, the Lentsch family has been cultivating wine for over three generations. It all began with the great-grandfather and a few vineyards on a hobbyist level even before 1955. The young winery truly became visible in 1962 when Franz Lentsch senior built the 30-meter-long brick vaulted cellar, which remains the heart of the operation to this day.
Today, the Lentsch family winery rests on four shoulders: father Franz is the tinkerer in the cellar, mother Elisabeth is the hostess with an eye for tastings. Their sons Markus and Thomas, as the next generation, are leading the business into a modern future. Markus is a trained winemaker and is responsible for the cellar, quality, and sales. Thomas combines technology and vineyard work and keeps the machinery running. With a total area of 15 hectares - half white, half red - the Lentsch family has become a serious player on Lake Neusiedl.
The oenological focus is astonishingly clear: In the white wine sector, Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay dominate. In the red wine sector, they rely on Burgenland classics such as Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent, often as a Reserve. In suitable years, noble sweet wines are also produced in the highest predicate levels.
The style is maximally shaped by the lake: A huge heat reservoir that ensures rich and round ripeness. Finely spicy character from exciting soils. The hot, dry winds from the Pannonian Basin keep the canopy dry and give the wine character and grip - not like a stupid muscle-bound brute, but like a structurally trained athlete. Fascinating wines.
Close to nature with wind, sand, and sea breeze.
The climate here plays its part, and they make use of it: plenty of sun, little rainfall, plus the sea breeze that keeps the foliage dry. In the vineyard, they use cover crops, which are, for example, rolled instead of constantly being tilled. This reduces soil stress and helps retain water in the system.
Craftsmanship without a show, with open doors.
Here, "honesty" is less about buzzwords and more about how things are done. Hand-picking and gentle processing are cherished as guiding principles. This is complemented by everyday transparency: tastings and on-site sales are standard, so you encounter not just a label, but actual people. Markus is responsible for the cellar and quality, Thomas for the vineyards, and Elisabeth keeps logistics and hospitality running smoothly. The result tastes not of makeup, but of honest family craftsmanship.
Anchored in the village.
The winery's social impact is primarily through its accessibility: open cellar doors during the Podersdorf Wine Spring, Martiniloben, and tastings directly with the winemakers. This is a living village infrastructure for wine and tourism. In contrast, concrete, permanently documented donation or foundation programs by the winery are barely visible online. In Podersdorf itself, however, there are regular charity events, such as the Christmas Sounds by the Lake for the benefit of the Children's Cancer Aid.
«The aim is to infuse the uniqueness of the Lake Neusiedl landscape and the Pannonian way of life into the wine.»
