Spätburgunder Kalkbödele 2024
Spätburgunder Kalkbödele
Spätburgunder Kalkbödele
Fresh sour cherry with smoky florality.
The wine presents itself in a medium to deep ruby red with a slightly transparent core and delicate garnet reflections at the rim. The brilliant play of colors suggests ripe grapes, artisanal winemaking, and an elegant style with fine concentration.
The nose opens with fresh sour cherry, dark currant, and violet, accompanied by subtle smokiness and an earthy spice. With aeration, fine wood notes, some black tea, and a hint of herbs develop – elegant, cool, and very clearly defined.
On the palate, it is juicy and precise, with cool fruit and vibrant acidity. The tannins are silky and well-integrated, the body lean, almost dancing. Aromas of wild berries, delicate spice, and a hint of roasted notes provide depth and an elegant finish.
Hand-picking, complete destemming, spontaneous fermentation, and aging in large wooden barrels lend the wine authenticity and character. The chalky vineyard site provides mineral finesse. A Pinot Noir with terroir DNA and artisanal consistency – unpretentious, precise, and deeply rooted.
Baden pioneers: Aging Burgundy in French barriques was a novelty.
For the “Gebrüder Mathis”, winegrowing on the Tuniberg began two generations ago with a decision: the brothers Bernhard and Paul Mathis began to cultivate the storage areas of their parents' gypsum quarry as vineyards. The brothers quickly realized that their wines had not yet reached their full potential. They therefore decided to mature their Burgundy in French barriques - a first for Baden wine at the time. Inspired by the positive response to a wine that was not intended for sale, but only for their own use, the “Gebrüder Mathis” winery was founded in the 1970s.
