Spätburgunder Alte Rebe 2022
Spätburgunder Alte Rebe
Spätburgunder Alte Rebe
Juicy cherry with toasty blackberry.
The 2022 Spätburgunder Alte Reben appears like a tailor-made suit of ruby red – rich, dense, with a hint of violet shimmer at the edges. Even at first glance, it's clear: there's nothing thin or arbitrary here. This is substance in the glass that you can see.
The nose? A classic Pinot Noir blockbuster: Fresh raspberries, juicy cherries, a hint of ripe wild strawberries – and hovering above is a fine veil of toasted wood, vanilla, and noble cedar smoke. A touch of anise, a hint of licorice, and black pepper give the aroma that certain edgy upgrade. No kitsch, just character.
Fruit: The first sip is like a walk through a summer forest – crisp red berries, juicy cherries, ripe blackberries, and a whisper of black cherry in the background. Spice & Wood: Earthy notes, damp forest floor, a hint of smoke, with subtle toast and brioche aromas that resonate like a velvety echo. Mouthfeel: Silky, soft, yet with a noticeable grip – the tannins are so finely integrated that they provide structure rather than resistance. The acidity? Fresh, but not sharp – it keeps the wine taut like a well-rigged sailboat. Finish: Long, fruit-driven, with a pleasant spicy kick and a delicate mineral streak that flows through the aftertaste like a cool stream.
Deep-rooted, old vines deliver grapes with maximum concentration and expression. Hand-harvesting and meticulously selective fermentation ensure that only the best goes into the barrel. Aging in French oak brings elegance and depth without masking the terroir. Every sip tastes of its origin.
Baden pioneers: Aging Burgundy in French barriques was a novelty.
For the “Gebrüder Mathis”, winegrowing on the Tuniberg began two generations ago with a decision: the brothers Bernhard and Paul Mathis began to cultivate the storage areas of their parents' gypsum quarry as vineyards. The brothers quickly realized that their wines had not yet reached their full potential. They therefore decided to mature their Burgundy in French barriques - a first for Baden wine at the time. Inspired by the positive response to a wine that was not intended for sale, but only for their own use, the “Gebrüder Mathis” winery was founded in the 1970s.
