Baloiro Reserva 2017
Baloiro Reserva
Baloiro Reserva
Exciting blackberry with floral leather.
In the glass, the Baloiro Reserva presents a deep garnet red with a subtle violet shimmer. The core appears dense and concentrated, with the rim showing minimal lightening. Clear brilliance without cloudiness, calm streaks on the glass confidently announce substance and maturity.
Aromas of dark jam and exciting blackberries spread on the nose. The aromatic framework is provided by floral notes and spicy notes of savory and liquorice. Earthy aromas such as mushroom and leather are perfectly complemented by cloves and vanilla.
Powerful yet controlled on the palate. Dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a present, well-integrated acidity define the profile. Notes of dark chocolate and herbs add depth. The finish is dry, long, and structured with clear origin and serene tension.
Baloiro Reserva is made from 100% old Mencía vines (60-90 years old) grown on barren granite and clay soils in Bierzo. Hand-picking and 15-16 months of aging in French oak give the wine a mature structure and balance, characteristic of this small, family-run winery.
The 100-year-old vines of the Amigo family in the Spanish northwest
A little-known wine region in northwestern Spain. Exciting grape varieties and some century-old vines. A family that has been growing wine with dedication and passion for generations.
We are at Bodega Luzdivina in the Bierzo region in the far northwest of Spain, where Mencia grapes produce wines of the highest rank and character.
The wines are heavily influenced in the vineyard, as the unique characteristics of the soils and locations are utilized and preserved here.
One does not have to contradict that the great red wines of Spain come from Rioja and Priorat. But for some years now, a small region in the northwest of the country has emerged as a true high-flyer.
Bierzo constantly impresses with its great red wines made from the Mencia grape. These wines are not just a discovery, but a real highlight, as they are rich, structured, and graceful.
The Amigo family has been cultivating grapevines in the region for many generations. A total of 18 hectares of land are tended, spread over more than 120 small parcels, which are not far from each other. For the family, the soul of the wines comes from these small vineyards.
The vines do not grow on trellises as we know them, but as small free-standing bushes on the barren, stony soils.
The Mencia and Godello vines are between 50 and 100 years old. The old, almost disappeared grape varieties Jerez, Doña Blanca, and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown there.
