Baloiro Crianza Selection en Viña 2019
Baloiro Crianza Selection en Viña
Baloiro Crianza Selection en Viña
Spicy dark chocolate with cherry smoked almonds.
Ruby red with a deep core and clear violet reflections, the Baloiro Crianza Seleccion en Viña immediately shows density and concentration in the glass, typical of Mencía from Bierzo, without appearing opulent, and already visually delivers a promise of weight and character
The nose presents earthy, core aromas of cherry and plum jam, dark chocolate, and smoked almonds, along with black pepper spice and toasted sesame; traces of dark bread crust and beef jerky add depth and an almost savory presence to the bouquet.
On the palate, the heavy wine is a spicy powerhouse. It would be clumsy if it weren't for the very fine acidity that brings the wine into a juicy balance. The tannin is very wild, dominant and spicy.
Made from 100% Mencía grapes from old vines of the Bodega Luzdivina Amigo in Bierzo, this Crianza matures for at least twelve months in oak barrels, which shapes its earthy and spicy notes as well as its tannic structure. It is precisely this combination of traditional Mencía fruit and oak-aged maturity that makes it unique in this region.
The 100-year-old vines of the Amigo family in the Spanish northwest
A little-known wine region in northwestern Spain. Exciting grape varieties and some century-old vines. A family that has been growing wine with dedication and passion for generations.
We are at Bodega Luzdivina in the Bierzo region in the far northwest of Spain, where Mencia grapes produce wines of the highest rank and character.
The wines are heavily influenced in the vineyard, as the unique characteristics of the soils and locations are utilized and preserved here.
One does not have to contradict that the great red wines of Spain come from Rioja and Priorat. But for some years now, a small region in the northwest of the country has emerged as a true high-flyer.
Bierzo constantly impresses with its great red wines made from the Mencia grape. These wines are not just a discovery, but a real highlight, as they are rich, structured, and graceful.
The Amigo family has been cultivating grapevines in the region for many generations. A total of 18 hectares of land are tended, spread over more than 120 small parcels, which are not far from each other. For the family, the soul of the wines comes from these small vineyards.
The vines do not grow on trellises as we know them, but as small free-standing bushes on the barren, stony soils.
The Mencia and Godello vines are between 50 and 100 years old. The old, almost disappeared grape varieties Jerez, Doña Blanca, and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown there.
