After completing his studies, winemaker Kai Schubert and his partner Marion embarked on a worldwide search for the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir - and found it in New Zealand.

At the end of his school days in the Swabian town of Waiblingen, Kai Schubert already knew two things for sure: "Pinot Noir is my passion" and "I want to be a winemaker". No sooner said than done. After completing his viticulture studies in Geisenheim, the career changer began a worldwide search for the right place for a winery with the best conditions for Pinot Noir - and he chose New Zealand. In 1998, Kai emigrated to New Zealand with his partner Marion, who also became a winemaker. In Martinborough, in the very south of New Zealand's North Island, the two began planting vines on 14 hectares and realizing their dream of owning their own winery. In 2003, the first wines from Schubert Wines finally came onto the market. The success story begins...

In addition to the highest quality standards, the demand for naturalness is also particularly important for Kai and Marion's wines: the production of organic wines is a matter close to the heart of the entire Schubert Wines team: little intervention in the natural processes - the goal is fundamentally healthy vines that would not need protection from chemicals in the first place.

The worldwide search for the perfect conditions
The conditions for Pinot Noir are perfect here: the Wairarapa Valley has similarly cool temperatures as the more well-known Pinot Noir locations in Europe. A decisive advantage, however, is the dry and long autumn months. The surrounding mountains protect the valley from a lot of rainfall and make it the driest place on New Zealand's North Island.
The harsh climate with its strong winds results in low yields and dry, healthy grapes. The grapes are also smaller and the skin is thicker. All of this has a positive effect on the aroma of the well-known New Zealand Pinot Noirs.
