Baloiro Blanco
White blossoms with juicy apricot.
Apparently, it’s not only full-bodied red wines that come from Bierzo, but also elegant white wines: a vibrant straw yellow with a golden shimmer.
We smell a walk through forest and meadow: white blossoms, lavender, drying hay, apricots, and ripe lemons. Clear as a mountain stream, fragrant as a flower meadow, and ethereal as pine needles. The more air the wine draws, the more intense the aroma and fuller the taste.
The taste becomes fuller with every second exposed to air. A yellow-fruited apricot acidity with a subtle salty note gives the Baloiro an exciting length: balanced, young, and fresh.
Three old, partly almost forgotten grape varieties are staged by Miguel Angel Amigo: Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino Fino. The result is captivating. Bravo!
The 100-year-old vines of the Amigo family in the Spanish northwest
A little-known wine region in northwestern Spain. Exciting grape varieties and some century-old vines. A family that has been growing wine with dedication and passion for generations.
We are at Bodega Luzdivina in the Bierzo region in the far northwest of Spain, where Mencia grapes produce wines of the highest rank and character.
The wines are heavily influenced in the vineyard, as the unique characteristics of the soils and locations are utilized and preserved here.
One does not have to contradict that the great red wines of Spain come from Rioja and Priorat. But for some years now, a small region in the northwest of the country has emerged as a true high-flyer.
Bierzo constantly impresses with its great red wines made from the Mencia grape. These wines are not just a discovery, but a real highlight, as they are rich, structured, and graceful.
The Amigo family has been cultivating grapevines in the region for many generations. A total of 18 hectares of land are tended, spread over more than 120 small parcels, which are not far from each other. For the family, the soul of the wines comes from these small vineyards.
The vines do not grow on trellises as we know them, but as small free-standing bushes on the barren, stony soils.
The Mencia and Godello vines are between 50 and 100 years old. The old, almost disappeared grape varieties Jerez, Doña Blanca, and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown there.
