The winery

The passionate family captures the unadulterated beauty of nature, the castle and the Provencal sun in bottles, creating moments to last forever.

The current owner, Bernard Maurel, gave the decisive impetus to winemaking in the Maurel family and for the Astros star castle in 1963. He restarted winemaking on the estate, planted new grape varieties and built a wine cellar near the castle. AOC Côtes-de-Provence has been produced there since 1970 - initially red, but now the focus is on rosé. The year 2021 was the year of glory for the new Château d'Astros. The younger Maurel generation has now taken over the reins of the Knights Templar estate and is now practicing organic viticulture with complete conviction.

Organic wines from Provence.

It is not a given that organic quality wines can be produced in Provence. And yet the Maurel family at Château d'Astros manage to practice organic viticulture and work with nature rather than against it. The avoidance of chemical pesticides and the promotion of biodiversity are lived out of deep conviction - a role model for a region.

The location

Organic winegrowing in Provence.

The crickets are chirping, the air is hot and humid, a light scent of lavender wafts through the olive groves - that is Provence. First-class rosé wines grow here, for which Provence is rightly proud - after all, over 60% of all wines from Provence are rosé wines. The landscape is shaped by the sea, hills, and the climate of the Mediterranean coast: sun-kissed and slightly windy. But high humidity is also part of Provence, preventing a dry environment for the fragile grapes. The production of organic wine is therefore a great challenge, but one that is mastered par excellence at Château d'Astros.
