Spätburgunder Oberrotweil 2023
Spätburgunder Oberrotweil
Spätburgunder Oberrotweil
Cool fruit meets warm spice
In the glass, this Pinot Noir displays a brilliant ruby red with slight garnet reflections. Its clarity is flawless, and the color depth is medium-bodied. When swirled, the wine leaves elegant, finely drawn streaks, hinting at its structure and gentle, sweet extract.
The nose reveals a fascinating balance of fruit and spice. Aromas of ripe raspberries, sour cherries, and red currants mingle with subtle notes of cloves, a delicate smokiness, and a cool mineral touch. A hint of violets and earthy undertones lends additional depth to the bouquet.
On the palate, the wine is silky yet complex. The red berry aromas are present and are accompanied by elegant spice notes and a hint of toasted oak. The fine acidity lends freshness, while the polished tannins ensure a long, harmonious finish.
This Pinot Noir comes from a high-altitude single vineyard on weathered volcanic rock, which ensures optimal heat absorption. The wine is spontaneously fermented, aged in used barriques, and bottled unfiltered – a handcrafted, demanding winemaking process that combines pure finesse with structure.
The Peter Wagner Way: Elegant freshness versus lush sweetness. Dry and fully fermented development, long yeast storage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Peter Wagner is a winner - young, focused, progressive. After studying in Geisenheim and gaining 5 years of experience as a cellar master at "the" Franz Keller from Kaiserstuhl, he took over his parents' business in Oberrotweil and started from zero to one hundred with the 2017 vintage. Peter Wagner scores points with his own style, which seems unusual for the Kaiserstuhl: he harvests his grapes relatively early in the year in order to counteract the Baden wine with its typical lush sweetness with a slim and elegant freshness. In addition, his wines are matured dry and fully fermented, stored on the yeast for a long time and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
