Blaufränkisch Reserve 2021
Blaufränkisch Reserve
Blaufränkisch Reserve
Full-bodied. Black cherry and bitter chocolate.
Dark ruby red with a violet core and fine, slow streaks. The light refracts on the glass wall like evening sun on deep water. The color reveals ripeness and concentration without becoming opaque. A wine that visually exudes both tranquility and strength.
The nose reveals a dense weave of black cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Fine notes of smoke and spice are also present, along with a hint of dark chocolate and a nuance of vanilla. The bouquet appears ripe, earthy, and charmingly tart – like dark fruit on warm stone after a summer rain.
On the palate, it is powerful and structured with silky pressure. The tannins are present but polished. Dark fruit meets chocolate, pepper, and a hint of dried herbs. The finish is long, juicy, and spicy – a wine with attitude, depth, and supple power.
The grapes come from sun-drenched plots on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, where limestone soils meet mild winds that perfectly balance the vines. The wine matured in small oak barrels, which lends it depth, structure, and that unmistakable dark spice.
Family winery with a sea breeze and a lighthouse.
In Podersdorf, where the iconic lighthouse stands in Lake Neusiedl, the Lentsch family has been cultivating wine for over three generations. It all began with the great-grandfather and a few vineyards on a hobbyist level even before 1955. The young winery truly became visible in 1962 when Franz Lentsch senior built the 30-meter-long brick vaulted cellar, which remains the heart of the operation to this day.
Today, the Lentsch family winery rests on four shoulders: father Franz is the tinkerer in the cellar, mother Elisabeth is the hostess with an eye for tastings. Their sons Markus and Thomas, as the next generation, are leading the business into a modern future. Markus is a trained winemaker and is responsible for the cellar, quality, and sales. Thomas combines technology and vineyard work and keeps the machinery running. With a total area of 15 hectares - half white, half red - the Lentsch family has become a serious player on Lake Neusiedl.
The oenological focus is astonishingly clear: In the white wine sector, Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay dominate. In the red wine sector, they rely on Burgenland classics such as Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent, often as a Reserve. In suitable years, noble sweet wines are also produced in the highest predicate levels.
The style is maximally shaped by the lake: A huge heat reservoir that ensures rich and round ripeness. Finely spicy character from exciting soils. The hot, dry winds from the Pannonian Basin keep the canopy dry and give the wine character and grip - not like a stupid muscle-bound brute, but like a structurally trained athlete. Fascinating wines.
