Arroyo Izquierdo
The star of Rueda already defied phylloxera.
Miguel Arroyo Izquierdo is a fourth-generation Verdejo winemaker. His vines withstood phylloxera and only yield their fruit at night.
Fourth-generation Verdejo tradition from ancient vines.
The Rueda region is located in Castile-León – about 140km northwest of Madrid. On the high plateau between 600-800 meters above sea level, Miguel Arroyo Izquierdo now runs his family winery of the same name in the fourth generation. The sole focus of the winemaking family is on the indigenous Verdejo grape variety, which is the obvious star of the region. Often compared to Sauvignon Blanc, the grape variety brings even more creamy minerality when the winemaker knows how to handle the grape. And Miguel does just that.
His vines are much older than most vines in the region, as they stand on incredibly barren and sandy soil. The soil is so sandy that even the phylloxera bit its teeth here at the end of the 19th century and preferred to let the Spanish sun shine on its crown. Speaking of sun and heat: The Verdejo grape is largely harvested at night to prevent premature oxidation of the grapes in the usual heat of the day.
In our eyes, Miguel juggles with the Verdejo grape like no other: His wines reflect the essence of the region and are characterized by freshness, crispness and elegant minerality.
Traditional viticulture.
The winery places great emphasis on environmentally friendly practices. By traditionally cultivating Verdejo grapes and processing them by hand, the natural balance of the vineyards is preserved. This approach promotes biodiversity and ensures sustainable wine production.
Honest craftsmanship.
Miguel Arroyo Izquierdo stands for transparency and authenticity. By nurturing old vines and eschewing industrial methods, he creates wines that genuinely reflect the terroir. This philosophy guarantees honest wines with character.
Responsibility for the team in the engine room
The work in winemaking is often physically demanding and time-consuming, and not just during harvest time. Cheap workers from low-wage countries are popular. Against this background, high standards in the SOCIAL area are of fundamental importance to us.
✔ Fair wages and humane treatment
✔ Social responsibility

"Our wines are the liquid diary of our terroir."
Too sandy for phylloxera.
