Philipp Kuhn
From young winemaker to VDP icon: A modern Palatinate fairy tale.
At just 20 years old, Philipp Kuhn took over the family winery in Laumersheim and, over 30 years, transformed it into one of the leading estates in the Pfalz region. Today, his name is also internationally synonymous with outstanding dry Rieslings and Burgundies from VDP top sites characterized by limestone.
Courage, terroir, and dry class.
Philipp Kuhn's story reads like a modern Palatinate fairy tale: at just twenty years old, he took over his parents' winery in the early 90s. His father gave him free rein at the time – a brave show of trust that would pay off. Instead of taking the easy path, the young winemaker courageously focused on quality, new grape varieties, and consistently dry wines. The family winery, whose roots in Laumersheim date back to the 17th century, grew under his direction from an insider tip to a celebrated top estate.
Today, Philipp Kuhn cultivates around 40 hectares in some of the best vineyards in the Northern Palatinate. Among the grape varieties, Riesling (approx. 17 hectares) and Pinot Noir (approx. 13 hectares) are the main protagonists, flanked by white and red Burgundy varieties, and even international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. In each of his wines, you can feel the winemaker's signature: deeply rooted in Palatinate tradition, yet always open to innovation. After over 30 vintages full of successes – from countless awards (including ten German Red Wine Awards and four Riesling Awards) to joining the VDP in 2008 – it is clear: here is an all-rounder at work, who sets the bar high equally in white and red. And despite all the triumphs, the VDP icon Philipp Kuhn has remained one thing: a down-to-earth Palatinate native who keeps his homeland alive in the glass.
Sustainability by conviction.
In the vineyard and in the cellar, Philipp Kuhn lives and breathes sustainability out of conviction. For years, he has been working organically (now certified) and avoids chemicals wherever possible: weeds are removed mechanically instead of with herbicides, and the vines grow in harmony with nature. As co-founder of Fair'n Green, he thinks beyond organic farming and takes holistic responsibility. He also focuses on climate protection within his operations – from electric vehicles between the vines to renewable energy in the cellar. For Philipp Kuhn, sustainability is not a trend, but a living principle – palpable in every drop of wine.
The truth.
At Philipp Kuhn, only the authentic makes it into the glass. The winemaker stands for straightforward winemaking that does without frills or beautifying manipulations. All wines are deliberately vinified dry – instead of flattering with residual sugar, they rely on the pure expressiveness of their origin. Hand-picked and vinified with great intuition, the wines retain their authentic character. Artificial aromas or inexplicable additives? Not a chance. Instead, Kuhn relies on natural fermentation processes, time, and traditional craftsmanship. The result is honest growths that deliver on their promise: unadulterated drinking pleasure that proudly displays the signature of the terroir and the winemaker.
Do good with wine.
For Philipp Kuhn, responsibility doesn't end at the edge of the vineyard. The winemaker is a co-founder of "VinoPhilAnthropen" – an association that combines a love for wine with philanthropy. Through exclusive tastings, charity auctions, and benefit wines, donations flow into social projects in the region to help people in need. Internally, too, his sense of responsibility is evident: all employees – whether permanent or seasonal – enjoy fair conditions and genuine appreciation. He proves that excellent wine and doing good can go hand in hand.
"Our wine philosophy is simple. We always strive for the highest quality."
