Here, forgotten tradition meets biodynamic innovation. Since 1991, Hans Oliver Spanier has been producing outstanding Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, characterized by the region's mineral-rich soils. As an ecological pioneer, he stands up against the mass production of the past decades. HO Spanier is a pioneer in shaping individual vineyards in Rheinhessen.
Where previously only mass-produced wines were produced, this biodynamic pioneer focused on individual vineyards.
The VdP winery Battenfeld-Spanier was founded in 1991 by Hans Oliver Spanier and has quickly become one of the most respected wineries in Rheinhessen. From the very beginning, HO Spanier decided against the Rheinhessen way of the time: mass production. As a pioneer, he recalled what had almost been forgotten: the individual vineyards, the love of the terroir, the slowness.
With the game-changing strategy of terroir wines in its luggage, HO Spanier was able to secure the best individual vineyards for a small sum in the 1990s. In the years that followed, the terroir renaissance got rolling and led the winery to great success.
A second decisive factor for success is the early decision to choose the most ecologically sensible way of growing wine: biodynamic. 30 years ahead of time, Spanier relied on natural wine, on controlled inactivity. To let the terroir shine so brightly in natural wine requires a great deal of expertise, precision and a strong intuition. HO Spanier proves in all qualities that his wines are one thing: unmistakably Rheinhessen.
Sustainability and Biodynamics as Gamechangers
Battenfeld-Spanier has been committed to biodynamic wine production since 2005. The winery's philosophy aims to respect and promote natural processes by not burdening the soil with synthetic fertilizers. Instead, biodynamic preparations are used to increase soil fertility and make the vines more resistant to climatic fluctuations.
Wines that combine nature and craftsmanship
At Battenfeld-Spanier, craftsmanship is paramount. Every wine is an expression of the terroir, the work in the vineyard and the devotion to nature. Hans Oliver Spanier sees the vine as a translator of the soil, especially the calcareous sites, and allows nature to tell its story through minimal intervention in the wine cellar. This approach ensures authentic wines with a deep character of origin.
Responsibility for the team in the engine room
The work in winemaking is often physically demanding and time-consuming, and not just during harvest time. Cheap workers from low-wage countries are popular. Against this background, high standards in the SOCIAL area are of fundamental importance to us.
