Weinbeschreibung

Mature forest floor with cherry tobacco

In the glass, a mature brick hue with a brownish rim appears – transparent, yet not tired. A dignified play of colors that speaks of the wine's long journey. Like a well-aged tuxedo: patina, but perfectly in shape.

The fruit hasn't disappeared – it's just become quieter. Dried cherries, leather, tobacco leaf and mushrooms, with a hint of cocoa powder and roasted nuts. In the background: old furniture polish, orange zest, a hint of forest after summer rain. Matured, yet vibrant. Depth, no dustiness.

On the palate, the 1999 is as smooth as a suede worry stone: ripe tannins, barely any resistance, everything at peace within itself. The acidity is present, providing structure, but no sharpness. Leather, dried herbs, sage, and a hint of balsamic characterize the finish. Gentle, but not weak – a quiet wine with good memory.

At the end of the 1990s, Ribera del Duero was still far from the hype. The 1999 vintage was carefully aged in the traditional style – long maceration, around two years in wood, predominantly American oak. Afterwards, it was allowed to mature in the cellar – like a wine that has been waiting for its moment. And now: lights, camera, action.

Dehesa de los Canónigos

Dehesa de los Canonigos is one of the great historical estates of the Ribera del Duero and one of the best Tempranillo producers – and all without any “brand stickers”.

Ribera del Duero - This region produces Spain's most expensive red wines, and it's teeming with names that command hundreds of euros per bottle – Pingus, Vega Sicilia, Emilio Moro, and many more. These are the neighbors of Belen and Ivan, who are now running their Dehesa los Canonigos for the 5th generation. The name translates to "Pasture of the Canons" and refers to the canons of the cathedral in Valladolid and their possessions in the region.
The two siblings form a perfect team. Belen's domain is the wine cellar, while Ivan handles the management of the winery and the accompanying agricultural land. With great passion, the two siblings produce wines that can easily compete with their neighbors: they manage to reach the top at a fair price. In 2025, the winery was ranked number 1 among all wineries by the renowned magazine "Verema". Without purchased "brand labels".
