Emotion through Terroir

Grégory Barbet has been managing the Domaine de la Pirolette winery since 2013. His goal: to create emotional wines with a lot of character in an area whose reputation suffered greatly decades ago.

The new generation in traditional Beaujolais

Winegrowing seems to have had a home in Saint Amour since time immemorial. Not only is the dreamy village part of Burgundy, but also part of Beaujolais. A few decades ago, the slightly sparkling wine from Beaujolais had a bad reputation, but since the new generation has come along, it is clear that those days are over.
Grégory Barbet and his sisters took over the reins of the winery in 2013 and do not produce on a mass scale. Their goal: to arouse emotions through tangible terroir. Easy to say, but that is precisely why real professionals are needed at work, such as the likeable Grégory Barbet. He has his winery on the ridge near the church of Saint Amour. The building itself dates back to 1600 and takes its name from the small white flower that can be found here (German: moss eye).

All organic or what?

There are many definitions of what NATURAL means in winemaking. Not all winemakers are certified to treat nature responsibly. So we check for ourselves on site whether a winemaker meets our standards for treating the natural product wine.

✔ Organic, vegan, unfiltered, natural, etc.

✔ Biodiversity instead of monoculture

✔ Natural products produced at the pace of nature

Trust as the most important currency

Over 50 additives can be used in wine production, none of which have to be listed on the label. Mass-produced and cheap wines are flooding the market with artificially produced smells, appearances and tastes. The security of holding an HONEST product in your hand is therefore our top priority.

✔ 100% family wineries

✔ Personal relationship with the winemaker

✔ No influence from ratings, seals or points

Responsibility for the team in the engine room

The work in winemaking is often physically demanding and time-consuming, and not just during harvest time. Cheap workers from low-wage countries are popular. Against this background, high SOCIAL standards are of fundamental importance to us.

✔ Fair wages and humane treatment

✔ Social responsibility

✔ Social commitment

"We respect the diversity of our terroir to produce a complex wine that evokes emotions."

The location

Saint Amour in Beaujolais.

In the south of Burgundy, on the border with the Côte du Rhône, lies Beaujolais - more precisely Saint Amour - one of 10 appellations in Beaujolais. These appellations differ in both geology and microclimates, thus producing very different wines from neighboring plots.
At Saint Amour we find a lot of granite rock and thus a profound and mineral coolness in the wine. Saint Amour itself is divided into individual locations such as Le Carjot - this terroir is explained in more detail in the wine.
